Canine Behaviourist 

Position: Canine Behaviourist
Location: Coldstream
Contract: 30 – 38hrs

Are you a Canine Behaviourist looking for a new opportunity?

We have a very rare opportunity for you, a role with strong emotional reward and a sense of purpose.

Working with our shelter dogs, you will be integral in their rehabilitation and total welfare. You will be highly skilled in understanding and recognising canine motivations and behaviour. Your efforts will deliver positive outcomes for homeless dogs, providing the foundation on which they build their lives with their new families.

This is a new position at Animal Aid; you will use your expertise to build on the hard work of our Welfare Kennels team, in keeping with our positive reinforcement approach to training, socialisation, and rehabilitation.

What a day in this role would look like:

• Behaviour assessment of in-care animals and those being considered for surrender
• Development and monitoring of behaviour/training plans
• Implementation of care, behaviour, and training plans supported by the Welfare Kennels team
• Developing and overseeing our foster care program
• Daily observation of in-care animals
• 1:1 training delivery with dogs requiring expertise
• Post adoption follow up and support
• Formulating and delivering staff training
• Delivering public group and private training

The successful applicant will have a high level of canine behaviour acumen, with the confidence and ability to lead and teach our Welfare Kennels team.

Preferred experience/qualifications:

• Minimum Certificate 3 in dog behaviour and training, NDTF or similar qualification.
• Animal behaviour training with 5+ years of experience.
• Experience working with shelter dogs.

This role is an integral part of our greater animal welfare mission, delivered by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers across Animal Aid businesses, including Shelters, Boarding Facilities, Grooming Services, Animal Training, Retail, Fundraising and Community Engagement.

Animal Attendant – Welfare Kennels

Position: Animal Attendant
Location: Coldstream
Contract: MUST be available P/H and weekends

Full Time Animal Attendant – Welfare Kennels

Looking for an opportunity with a difference; a role with strong emotional reward and a sense of purpose?

A very rare opportunity has become available for an animal attendant to join our Welfare Kennels Team.

The Victorian Animal Aid Trust (Animal Aid) has been serving the local community since 1935, caring for and re-homing countless lost, abused and unwanted companion animals.

Successful applicant must be flexible for work across a 7 day roster.

We are seeking a person who has had experience working in a similar role, someone who has STRONG canine handling skills, who has had experience in working with animals with varying temperaments and who is confident in assisting to train.

The successful applicant will have the following skills:

      • Animal Husbandry- Proven animal husbandry and canine handling knowledge and experience. Dog Breed knowledge along with good behavior / medical observation skills. Must be comfortable with handling dogs with varying size and temperament.

It is not enough to just “love” animals, you must also have a high level of experience within a similar industry.

      • Teamwork– You must be able to work in a team environment, one where all staff members are respectful, communicate well and are able to depend on each other.
      • Communication & Customer Service – Must have sound customer service experience along with exceptional communication skills.
      • Physical ability / Time management – This role is physically demanding, must have a “can do” attitude and be prepared to work in all weather conditions. The position is fast paced and requires everyone to be able to manage their time and priorities to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner

Key Selection Criteria 

      • Strong Animal handling & training skills
      • Strong understanding of reading & understanding dog behavior
      • Knowledge of cleaning and infection control procedures
      • Ability to work with minimal supervision
      • Team skills, and a positive and loyal attitude to the VAAT at all times
      • Client communication skills
      • Basic computer skills
      • Current Victorian driver’s license

Role duties & responsibilities

      • Husbandry and handling of animals.
      • Administration and Customer Service
      • Monitor and report animal health.
      • Upkeep and clean the facilities.
      • Work in a team environment and support volunteers.

Associate Veterinarian

A fantastic opportunity exists for an experienced veterinarian who is seeking work life balance with financial and emotional reward. As an Associate Veterinarian, you will be responsible for applying your veterinary skills in a mix of private and welfare cases. Our clinic principally cares for small animals, with occasional exotics and small ruminant cases. 

Our team is led by a highly skilled Clinic Director who provides mentorship and opportunities for learning. Our clinic was built in 2018 and is equipped with latest technologies. As an Associate Veterinarian, you will be an integral part of our animal welfare mission and be working with a great team.

We are looking for someone who is highly motivated, has a drive to succeed and is wanting to deliver their veterinary skills in a busy team orientated environment. The right candidate will have the energy to make a real difference.

A fantastic opportunity exists for an experienced Cert IV qualified Vet Nurse to join the Animal Aid family. Our clinic primarily cares for small animals, with occasional exotics and small ruminant cases. We are looking for a nurse who is experienced in all aspects of nursing & must have strong surgical / theatre experience.

This is a role with diversity, as the successful applicant will perform a mix of both private and welfare veterinary services, with shifts covering FOH, BOH and Surgery.
