At Animal Aid, our mission is rooted in the compassion and care we extend to every animal in need.

Recently, we had the privilege of helping Lola, a welfare dog who underwent transformative surgeries, including Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO), facial skin fold resections, and nareplasty.

Here’s an inside look at these procedures and their impact on Lola’s life.

What is TPLO?

Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) is a surgical procedure used to stabilise the knee joint after the cranial cruciate ligament (similar to the ACL in humans) has ruptured. This surgery helps restore stability and function to the joint, allowing for improved mobility and less pain.

Lola’s Journey: Overcoming Pain and Mobility Issues

Lola came to Animal Aid with a significant limp and noticeable discomfort in her right hind leg. X-rays revealed a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament, necessitating TPLO surgery. This procedure was essential to alleviate her pain and correct her irregular gait.

Goals of TPLO Surgery

The primary objectives of TPLO surgery are to reduce pain, restore mobility, and improve the overall quality of life. For Lola, this meant being able to walk, run, and play without the constant pain that had been holding her back.

Additional Procedures: Facial Skin Fold Resections and Nareplasty

In addition to TPLO, Lola underwent facial skin fold resections and nareplasty. These procedures are particularly important for brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs, which often have excess skin folds and narrowed nasal passages that can severely impede breathing. Lola’s surgeries helped open her nasal passages and remove excess skin, enabling her to breathe more comfortably and handle physical activity and warm weather much better.

Lola’s Recovery and Foster Care

We are thrilled to report that Lola is recovering well post-surgery! She is currently in foster care, receiving the love and attention she needs to heal completely. Soon, she will be ready to find her forever home, where she can enjoy a pain-free, happy life.

Supporting Animal Aid’s Mission

Performing specialised surgeries like TPLO, facial skin fold resections, and nareplasty requires significant resources and expertise. At Animal Aid, we are fortunate to have a skilled veterinary team capable of delivering such life-changing care. However, the costs are substantial, and we rely on the generosity of our community to continue providing these vital services.
