Work Experience
Year 10 Placement
We are offering placements for Year 10 students who are wanting to enter the animal industry. Students are expected to complete 5 consecutive days of work in the shelter setting, which may include:
8:00am – 4:00pm or 9:00am – 5:00pm (depending on departmental requirements.)
- Cleaning pens/kennels
- Caring for the animals
- Feeding
- Dog walking
- Laundry
The work is physical in all sorts of weather. Once your application has been accepted, we will be in contact to organise your interview time and date.
Students will be selected based on a successful interview process.

VCAL Vocational Majors Block Placements
Vocational Major must be in Animal Studies to apply.

First Block Placement:
FEBRUARY 2025
- Monday 24th February – Friday 2nd May 2025
This placement involves one day per week for a duration of 10 weeks work experience, where students apply their vocational skills in a real-world setting. (80hrs)
Second Block Placement:
JUNE 2025
- Monday 30th June – Friday 5th September 2025
Similar to the first block, this placement involves one day per week for a duration of 10 weeks work experience, would occur during the winter term, providing further opportunities for students to refine their skills in a workplace environment. (80hrs)

Timetable:
The individual timetable for these placements will depend on the student’s vocational pathway and school arrangements. Your individual timetable will be emailed to you on acceptance.
Placements may occur in one department or a combination of departments:
- Welfare Kennels
- Welfare Cattery
- Boarding Kennels and Cattery
- Grooming Salon
Pre-placement preparation: Learning how to communicate in the workplace, understanding health and safety protocols in a welfare setting.
In-placement support: Regular check-ins with the students to assess progress.
Post-placement debrief: Reflecting on the experience, providing feedback, and identifying areas for improvement.
